Events for the Whole Self
Imagine spending a day meeting artists in their studios, talking with them about their work. The smell of turpentine and oil, the cans of paint, the works in progress all there for you to experience. It can be sort of transcendental. People who create have these secrets that they keep in their studios. Little indications of who they are, why they create and sometimes even reveal what their work is about. It’s very different than seeing artwork all shiny and positioned — in a white finished wall of a gallery. There are no stories or secrets there. So imagine getting into this creative world for a while and then walking down the hall to another studio where you lie down and indulge in the muscle soothing benefits of a reflexology massage. You get up feeling refreshed and maybe a little lighter in mind than before. You take in a thought-provoking and inspirational seminar which gives you great ideas on health for the body and mind of you and your family. This is a day in the life of an event at Monroe Center. It’s really about the whole self. We need art to feel alive…and so why shouldn’t art and health be combined. Especially with all of the New Years Eve resolutions — get thin, stop smoking, get healthy. Why not add ‘surround yourself with creativity’ to the list as well. Most events at Monroe Center try to incorporate activities that engage you…whether you actually get involved and take a class or you are there to witness someone creating in their studio or hear a musical performance.Monroe Center for the Arts is open to the public each month for a variety of cultural events. It is located at 720 Monroe Street, between 7th and 8th Streets, and is adjacent to the Ninth Street/Congress Street Light Rail Station. Admission is free and there is free parking at the rear of the building. For more information on this or any other event, please visit www.monroecenter.com.
