The Wolfman Cometh
Monroe Center’s very own Wolfgang Schalk, presently giging in California will be hitting New York in April. Wolf is an innovative and outstanding Jazz guitar virtuoso, whose original compositions have shades of the old masters, especially George Benson. Each composition though, has that distinctive cutting Wolf bite.
Not many people are aware of this but Wolf has played with the late great Michael Brecker. He cut his first album, in 1993, ‘The Be Hop Hip Bop’. In 1996, ‘The Second Third Man’ featuring Michael Brecker, was followed in 2002, by ‘Rainbow in The Night’ and recently in 2005, ‘Space Messengers’. Known to practice ten hours a day, Wolf has come a long way. He was born in Gleisdorf, Austria and eventually made his way to New York City in 1997. A short while later, The Wolf came to Monroe Center and set up his studio.
In Europe, Wolf is a jazz heavyweight. Austrian daily Die Presse calls him, “Easily one of Europe’s best guitarists.” Listening to Wolf, you know that the newspaper was not saying this because Wolf is their native son. Wolf has learnt and absorbed the nuances of Jazz from masters like John Coltrane, Miles Davis and Charlie Parker to mention a few. At his concerts, he plays his original compositions and also jazz standards to which he adds that Wolf touch.
Monroe Center has many great musicians, artists, craftsmen and women who have set up their studios here. The great Richie Havens has a studio here. The Center has a creative buzz that artists, musicians and artisans find invigorating. Come to Monroe Center and discover what it’s like to work in an atmosphere that is not corporate antiseptic. Here, you can touch the vibrations, feel the energy and listen to the free sound of creativity. One of our artists called it “Essentially Monroe.” And if you still have doubts, ask The Wolf, go ahead, he won’t bite.
